How do I insert a tampon? (girls)?

I just got my first period and its really heavy, I'm sick of being worried about the blood coming out of the pad and onto my pants. I can only put the tampon in a certain amount (the full tampon does go in) but whenever I sit, it REALLY hurts. I don't know why! Im desperate, PLEASE HELP :(
