Why wont robotech invasion play on my ps2?

i recently received a present from my friend but the game will not play on my ps2. he says that it plays on his and mine says disc cannot read or please insert a ps2 disc. please help me!!! and no negative comments in your post (i have received those quite recently also) or i will report abuse. thanks!
